Home Media on a mobile device

Did you know that you can view, search, stream and control media files stored on your home network devices with your Nokia Nseries multimedia computer?

Nokia's Home Media solution connects you wirelessly to your home network's media files. All you need is a compatible Nokia Nseries multimedia computer and a wireless network solution. Nokia Home Media also supports selected UPnP/DLNA Media renderers and servers.

In order to get started, you need to first set up Home Media on your mobile device. The easiest way to do this is to run the setup wizard on your device. You can do this by pressing the Menu button on your device and then selecting Tools > Connectivity > Home Media. The set up wizard will help you set up your home media for streaming and sharing files.

Setting up a wireless connection on your mobile device

After you've installed SimpleCenter's Home Media Server software on your PC and set up your wireless router's settings, you need to select a WLAN access point on your mobile device. There are different ways to set up an access point on your mobile device.

You can set up an access point easily by pressing the Menu button on your mobile device and then select Connectivity > Connection Manager > Available WLAN networks. Scroll to the WLAN network you want to access and then select Options > Define Access Point. Enter WAP/WEP key if necessary. Confirm access point by selecting Yes. Now you've set up the wireless connection on your mobile device. In case the access point is hidden, check your device manual for more information on how to find hidden network access points.

Sharing media files on your mobile device

After you've installed the Home Media Server application on your PC, set up your wireless router and selected an access point on your mobile device, you can start sharing content.

You can decide what type of content you want to share with your mobile device by creating settings for media sharing. Shared files will be available to all UPnP-compatible devices in your home media network.

You can create the settings by pressing the Menu button on your mobile device and then select Tools > Connectivity > Home Media > Share content. In the menu that appears, select the types of media files you want to share, i.e. images and video. By selecting this option, all image and video files stored on your mobile device will be shared in your home network when you're in the range of the WLAN access point.

After you've made selections for the types of media files you want to share, select Back to go back to the Home Media main menu. Please note that content sharing only shares the content you have stored on your phone at that time. Updating the shared files is under your control. The phone does not share new files automatically because you may not want to share all new media files with others.

Using your mobile device as a remote control

With Home Media, you can use your compatible Nokia Nseries multimedia computer as an all-purpose remote control to control the playback and viewing of shared media files in your home network. For example, you can control playback of your shared MP3 music files wirelessly on your mobile device via a UPnP connection.

To play your shared MP3 music files, press the Menu button on your mobile device and select Gallery > Home Network. After a list of devices appears, select the PC or device you wish to connect to. Browse through the folders and select the MP3 file you want to listen to. After selecting the file, a set of devices is shown. Select your compatible PC from the list. Audio is now played from your compatible PC. You can change the playback device by selecting a different device from the list. (If you are using a Nokia N78, Nokia N80, Nokia N95 8GB or some other model, you can do this from Home Media application's menu item Browse > Play on device).
