Get answers to your questions about Nokia Maps:
Nokia Maps is a mapping and routing application for different mobile devices. It is used for downloading maps and street plans, and also for saving favourite spots as landmarks to share with friends. It can also calculate routes from A to B as a basic, free feature (only on navigable maps).
For additional fees, you can purchase a navigation upgrade and guides. The navigation upgrade unveils the powerful GPS navigation features of Nokia Maps, with voice guidance. You can also buy optional, premium-branded travel guides, packed with tips and other valuable information.
1.2 What is the difference between route planning and navigation?
Route planning is a free feature (your network provider may charge for data transfer, therefore it is recommended that you use a Wi-Fi connection (such as hotspots) or a mobile internet flat rate; you can also avoid downloading data and costs related to data transfer by turning off the network connections in the network settings, (go to Options > Settings > Network > Network Usage > Never). It calculates and displays a route between two locations. A route simulation (with voice commands) is also possible (without paying additional license fees).
Navigation is an extra service, which is available for purchase. Navigation means that the route is calculated from your current GPS position to a chosen destination (for mobile devices without an internal GPS receiver, an external GPS receiver may be necessary; check your mobile device’s manual to see if it is equipped with an internal GPS receiver). The navigation is voice-guided, meaning it tells you how to get to the desired destination step by step (for example, "in 300 meters turn left…"). Navigation also automatically re-calculates the route if you take a wrong turn.
The navigation feature can only be purchased for regions for which a navigable map is available (there are navigable and non-navigable maps). A route simulation is also not possible on non-navigable maps. This is due to the often poor quality of map information on these maps.
1.3 What are the city guides?
Guides are optional, premium-branded travel companions for a range of cities and regions — with detailed information on cafés, music and clothes stores, museums, Wi-Fi hotspots and much more besides.
1.4 What do I see on the map?
Besides the usual cartographic elements like streets, the maps in Nokia Maps display locations from a database with over 15 million Points of Interest (POI). These symbols cover basic information about a city, such as train stations, post offices, parking areas, etc. The icons are clickable; if you click on an icon, you will receive more information about the location
1.5 Is Nokia Maps free?
Yes, the mapping and routing is free. Your network provider might charge for data transfer. It is recommended that you use a Wi-Fi connection (such as hotspots) or a mobile internet flat rate.
A flashing symbol in the lower left corner of the screen (on Symbian Series 60 2nd Edition mobile devices like the Nokia N70, this symbol can be found in the upper right corner of the screen) tells you when data transfer is taking place and how much data has been downloaded. You can also configure the block data transfer settings, go to Options > Settings > Network > Network Usage > Never.
Additionally, there is a 3-day navigation license coming with Nokia Maps, so you can test the navigation for three days without paying for a license (not available for Symbian Series 60 2nd Edition mobile devices, for example, Nokia N70). For some mobile devices, an external GPS receiver might be necessary to perform navigation (for example, for Nokia N73). Check your mobile device’s manual to see if it already has an internal GPS receiver.
If you like the navigation feature in Nokia Maps, you can of course continue using it! Navigation for different countries and regions is available for purchase. To purchase a navigation upgrade for a certain region, in the main screen of Nokia Maps, go to Options > Extra Services > Add Navigation > Select region/country and select a license period (7-day, 1-month, 1-year, 3-year license period). Choose your preferred payment method and press OK. A secure data connection (via Wi-Fi or mobile internet) will be established to connect to the license server (data transfer costs may arise).
There are more extra services such as guides, which are also available for purchase.
1.6 Which features in Nokia Maps are free?
However, your network provider may charge for data transfer, therefore it is recommended that you use a Wi-Fi connection (such as hotspots) or a mobile internet flat rate. You can also avoid downloading data and costs related to data transfer by turning off the network connections in the network settings (go to Options > Settings > Network > Network Usage > Never).
1.7 Which features are purchasable? How can I buy them?
You can purchase full, voice-guided navigation with automatic re-routing, as well as thousands of city guides. These features can be purchased directly via the application and payment is made either by mobile billing, credit card pr vouchers.
To purchase additional features like navigation or city guides, start Nokia Maps and choose Options > Extra Services and then choose the service you would like to purchase.
Note that for the use of navigation, an external GPS receiver may be necessary for some mobile devices. Check your mobile device’s manual to see if your mobile device has an internal GPS receiver or whether you will need an external GPS receiver.
1.8 Is Nokia Maps supported by my mobile device?
You can see a list of mobile devices Nokia Maps supports at the download page. Nokia Maps is available for selected mobile devices running on Symbian Series 60 2nd Edition and 3rd Edition. Please note that the testing for certain mobile devices is still ongoing and more compatible mobile devices will be listed as they become fully tested. Please note further that only certain mobile devices are equipped with GPS but you can still use Nokia Maps if you have an external GPS receiver.

On the non-navigable maps, a route simulation is also not possible.
1.10 Are there free updates for the City Guides?
The contents of the City Guides are updated. You can simply download and use the new City Guide since it will work with the same license.
Your network provider may charge for data transfer, therefore it is recommended that you use a Wi-Fi connection (such as hotspots) or a mobile internet flat rate. You can also avoid downloading data and costs related to data transfer by turning off the network connections in the network settings (go to Options > Settings > Network > Network Usage > Never).
1.11 How often is the map data in Nokia Maps updated?
The map data will be updated twice a year. You can check for map updates in the Nokia Maps application through Options > Settings > Network > Options > Check for map Updates. 1.14 Why does Nokia Maps not offer a tracking mode?
If you have a GPS receiver connected to your mobile device or if you own a mobile device with internal GPS receiver and your device is supported by Nokia Maps, the application can be used as full navigation solution. You can use the navigation feature for three days on all supported navigable maps without paying a license fee (note that the 3-day navigation trial is only available for Nokia Maps 1.0 on Symbian Series 60 3rd Edition mobile devices).
1.16 From where can I get additional information related to Nokia Maps and Nokia Map Loader?
If you are interested to find out more about Nokia Maps and the Nokia Map Loader, please visit http://nokiausa.com/nokiamaps
1.17 What can I do with the license code in Nokia Maps?
A license code is connected to every purchase you make in the purchase menu in Nokia Maps. While purchasing a navigation license, for example, you have the possibility to enter your e-mail address. You will then receive a confirmation of your purchase, including your license code. The license code follows the pattern CD 1234 1234 1234 1234.
You need the license code in case you want to change your mobile device.
In the event of a mobile device change, please contact Nokia Customer Care via http://www.nokia.com/support
Before calling Nokia Customer Care, please make sure that following information is at hands:
Nokia Maps is not only a mapping and routing application. The navigation upgrade unveils the powerful GPS navigation features of Nokia Maps, with voice guidance. (For mobile devices without an internal GPS receiver, an external GPS receiver may be necessary; check your mobile device’s manual to see if it is equipped with an internal GPS receiver.)
Navigation upgrades for selected countries and regions are available for purchase. To purchase a navigation upgrade for a certain region, in the main screen of Nokia Maps, go to Options > Extra Services > Add Navigation > Select region/country and select a license period (7-day, 1-month, 1-year, 3-year license period). Choose your payment method and press OK. A secure data connection (via Wi-Fi or mobile internet) will be established to connect to the license server (data transfer costs may arise).
A 3-day navigation trial valid for navigation on all supported navigable maps comes with Nokia Maps 1.0 on a Symbian Series 60 3rd Edition mobile device, so you can test the navigation function prior to purchasing it.
In case you want to update the firmware software of your Nokia mobile device (for example, via Nokia Software Updater), you can regain your navigation license in the Nokia Maps application for the remaining time period of your navigation license (go to Options > Extra services > Add navigation). Choose the region for which you purchased the navigation license and go to Options > Update.
Please allow the connection to the license server to check the purchase & license options by selecting Yes and by then selecting the proper Internet access point (if asked). A note xxx-day license activated is shown where xxx is the amount of days left of your license or alternatively the mobile device informs you that the license is updated.
2.2 I’ve purchased a navigation upgrade for a certain region. How do I start the navigation for the first time?
If you want to perform navigation, keep in mind that your start and destination points have to be inside the region for which you purchased the feature. To start the navigation, choose the destination of your route and make sure that you have a GPS signal (in case you have an external GPS receiver connected to your mobile device, please make sure that the connection is established and stable). Keep in mind that a GPS fix is only available if there are no obstacles between the GPS receiver and the sky, for example, in the dashboard of your car. (Make sure that you don't install the GPS receiver or mobile device within the areas of the passenger cabin that are subject to impact in a crash, or in the area into which the airbag would expand. Ensure that the GPS receiver and mobile device do not block the driver’s line of vision when installed.) As soon as you have found the place you want to navigate to, please click Options > Use this place > navigate to
2.3 How can I activate the 3-day navigation trial license?
To activate the 3-day navigation trial license in your mobile device, start the Nokia Maps application and go to Options > Extra Services > Add navigation. Accept the Terms and Conditions and then press Purchase (note that you actually do not purchase anything, but activate a pre-bundled license; you are not charged for using the 3-day navigation trial license, but data transfer costs may arise for the download of map data). Your mobile device will then try to connect to the license server to activate the navigation license. Choose an access point (you can use mobile internet or Wi-Fi). Finally, you will receive a confirmation notice telling you about the successful activation of your 3-day navigation trial valid on all supported navigable maps. Note that the 3-day navigation trial is only available for Nokia Maps 1.0 on Symbian Series 60 3rd Edition mobile devices!
Choose your payment method and press OK. A secure data connection (via Wi-Fi or mobile internet) will be established to connect to the license server (data transfer costs may arise).
2.4 For which region is the 3-day navigation trial license?
With the 3-day navigation trial license, you can use the navigation for three days without paying a license fee on all supported navigable maps (note that sometimes a cross-border navigation from one region into another is not possible, Tthis is due to the fact that Nokia Maps uses map data from two different map data providers). The 3-day navigation trial is only available for Nokia Maps 1.0 on Symbian Series 60 3rd Edition mobile devices!
2.5 How can I save my own locations and send them to a friend?
Your own locations can be saved as Landmarks. These locations can also be sent via MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service), SMS, e-mail, Bluetooth technology, or infrared.
If you would like to, for example, send your home address with location information to a friend, you can find your location from the map, save it as landmark to the selected category and send it to your friend in the Nokia Maps application. To save the location as a landmark, go to Options > Use this place > Save > As Landmark. Enter the name that you want to give to the landmark and press OK. You can then specify a category. To send your landmark, go to Options > Find place > Landmarks > Select > Send and choose your preferred sending method.
Depending on the medium you choose, costs for SMS or MMS (Multimedia Message Service) sending may arise; via Bluetooth technology and Infrared, sending is free of charge.
2.6 How do I update the map data in Nokia Maps?
To update your map data in the Nokia Maps application, go to Options > Settings > Network > Options > Check for map Updates. If there is a new release of map data, the application will prompt you to delete the preloaded map data. You can then download the new map data via mobile internet or Wi-Fi (data transfer costs may arise).
If the map data is updated, the application will display Your current maps are up to date.
When installing a new version of Nokia Maps on your mobile device, at the first launch of the application, it will automatically check the map data release you have been using so far (an online connection will be established; data transfer costs may arise). If a newer version of map data is available, the former data will be erased and the application will use the new map data.
If you have set the network settings in the Nokia Maps application to Never, the application continue using the old version of map data.
2.7 Is the navigation function also available in pedestrian mode?
When calculating the route, your routing settings are taken into account. However, navigation is not available in the pedestrian mode.
2.8 How do I zoom in and out in a map?
Use * to zoom in and # to zoom out of the map. You can also go to Options > Map options > Zoom in/out, 2D/3D.
2.9 How do I find cafés, fast food restaurants, etc. in my neighbourhood?
Nokia Maps is populated with 30 million points of interest (POI), including selected brands and categories. Search for your nearest café or a restaurant by starting the application and selecting your current position (for example, taking your GPS position if available), then go to Options > Use this place > Search nearby > Select category.
In the default settings, the search for POI is performed online, on the server. Therefore, data transfer costs may arise. You can avoid downloading data and costs related to data transfer by turning off the network connections in the network settings (go to Options > Settings > Network > Network Usage > Never). Note that in this case the search is performed on the POI locally available in your mobile device. To get better search results, we recommend you to allow an online connection, which performs the POI search on the server.
2.10 How do I use the route planner in Nokia Maps?
Prior to your journey, if you would like to plan a route, Nokia Maps easily allows you to do so. You can even have Nokia Maps simulate the planned route on the screen of your mobile device. Define your starting point (for example, go to Options > Find Place > Address) and go to Options > Use this place > Route from. Your starting point is filled in with the selected position. Click To to select the destination point and go to Options > Show route > Options > Start simulation if you just want to see a simulation of the route.
2.11 Can I use a City Guide as long as I want?
The use of a City Guide is not bound to any temporary limitation.
2.12 Can I force a download of an entire map area (for example, an entire country)?
Only if you scroll over the entire area, tile by tile. As soon as you scroll to a border of the map tile, the tile next to the border will be downloaded. This allows minimum data transfer.
If you need map data for an entire region / country, we recommend you download the Nokia Map Loader. Nokia Map Loader is a programme that enables your PC to download map data for the Nokia Maps application and to install it on your mobile device. This will save you the costs for downloading the map data through your mobile device, and it is also much faster. Furthermore, it brings the advantage of having the map data of entire cities or regions on your mobile device, so that the data is immediately available when starting the application, and you do not have to wait for the data to be downloaded.
2.13 Do I need a memory card for my mobile device?
Use of a memory card is recommended. If no memory card is present, a certain amount of internal memory is preserved for Nokia Maps (please mind that on Symbian Series 60 2nd Edition mobile devices like the Nokia N70 it is not recommended to use the internal device memory at all; please use a storage card on these mobile devices). This means that only this certain amount is used and if you download more map data, the oldest is deleted automatically.
2.14 Can I still make a phone call while using Nokia Maps?
Yes. All phone functions are preserved while Nokia Maps is running. Voice guidance is silenced during phone calls.
2.15 Does the setting for the memory card allocation for the map data (at Settings > Network > Max. memory card use) also apply to the mobile device’s internal memory if I am downloading the map data to the device memory, or is there some other limit for how much internal memory the application can use?
This setting only applies to the memory card. Internal memory maximum usage is set to 6 MB (for example on Nokia N95). Please mind that on Symbian Series 60 2nd Edition mobile devices like the Nokia N70 it is not recommended to use the internal device memory for installing Nokia Maps; please use a storage card on these mobile devices.
2.16 How can the entire map data memory be cleared when it is taking too much space on the memory card?
To clear all map data from your mobile device or memory card, use the option Delete maps from storage in the Nokia Map Loader or set the setting for the maximum memory card usage in the Nokia Maps application itself to 0 (Options > Settings > Network > Max. memory card use).
2.17 What mode do I have to set in my mobile device if I want to use the Nokia Map Loader?
Always use the ‘mass storage’ mode (not ‘PC suite’ mode). Note that when using Nokia Maps on a Nokia N70 (or any other Symbian Series 60 2nd Edition mobile device), to transfer map data to your mobile device you need to take the memory card out of your mobile device and insert it into a card reader connected to your PC. Start the Nokia Map Loader to transfer the required map data onto your memory card. On these mobile devices it is not possible to transfer map data via USB cable and PC Suite.
2.18 How can I listen to the navigation voice command again in the Nokia Maps application?
To listen to the navigation voice command again, select Options > Voice guidance > Repeat command or use the keypad shortcut 4 during a navigation or route simulation (option not available in the programme version for Nokia N70 or other mobile devices running on Symbian Series 60 2nd Edition).
2.19 I purchased a navigation license for a certain region for Nokia Maps on my mobile device. When I try to start the navigation, the application tells me a navigation upgrade is not available for this region - so why am I not able to navigate?
If you have purchased a navigation license but you are not able to navigate, go on the region for which you have purchased the license (through Add navigation > Accept terms and Conditions for Nokia Maps > Purchase Navigation upgrade > Select your preferred region) and try to purchase it again. In case the application tells you that you already have purchased a navigation license for this region, make sure that the start and destination points for your navigation lie within the region for which you purchased the navigation. Note that if the start and/or destination point of your route is not within the purchased region, the navigation does not work. Start and destination points have to be within the purchased region.
2.20 Why can't I do a cross-border navigation although I purchased navigation licenses for more than one region?
If you purchase a navigation upgrade for two regions (for example, DACH and BeNeLux), it is not possible to do a cross border navigation from a start point in one of the regions to a destination in the other region (for example, from Berlin to Amsterdam). However, if you have purchased the navigation upgrade for Western Europe, you will be able to do a cross-border navigation within that region.
2.21 Why is Nokia Maps sometimes connecting to the map server although I already downloaded map data for an entire country through the Nokia Map Loader?
Nokia Maps always tries to establish an online connection to the map server because an online search for addresses on the server is much quicker than searching the data on the local device memory or storage card.
The transfer of data is indicated by a flashing symbol in the lower left corner of the screen (on Symbian Series 60 2nd Edition mobile devices like the Nokia N70, this symbol can be found in the upper right corner of the screen). However, you can prevent the establishment of an online connection to avoid downloading data and costs related to data transfer through Nokia Maps Settings menu (Options > Settings > Network > Network Usage > Never). In this case, the application is tied to using the map data already available on the mobile device.
2.22 I don't hear any voice instructions for the navigation, what can I do?
Note that if you want to get voice guidance, you need to start the navigation first. If your mobile device is not equipped with an internal GPS receiver, you need to connect an external GPS receiver to your mobile device (for example, via Bluetooth technology).
If you do not hear anything, there may be multiple causes for it:
1. The voice files are not downloaded completely: Download the voice files through Options > Settings > General > Voice guidance. Choose your language and press the Back button and confirm the download. The download of the voice files through mobile Internet will then start.
2. Mobile Internet connection is switched off: To download the voice files, a mobile Internet connection must be activated in your mobile device, since the voice files will be downloaded directly from an Internet server.
3. Check the volume of your mobile device. During the navigation you can change the volume by selecting Options > Voice guidance > Volume.
In case you want to save data transfer costs (for example, while travelling), you can also download the voice commands via Nokia Map Loader.
2.23 I had updated my Nokia Maps to a new version and did a firmware software update afterwards. Now the application crashes every time I start it on my mobile device – what can I do?
If you have installed an update of Nokia Maps and updated the firmware software of your mobile device (“firmware reflash”) afterwards, a former version of Nokia Maps has been re-installed on your mobile device together with the firmware software. As this former Nokia Maps version might not be compatible with the map data of the newer version you used beforehand, the application may crash. To avoid this, simply re-install the latest version of Nokia Maps on your mobile device. This will correct the problem of your application crashing.
2.24 I cannot find an address from the Maps application, what can I do?
3.1 Are there any running costs?
Using the basic application as such is free, but you need to pay for the mobile internet connection for getting the map data from the server according to your network provider’s service plan. As large amounts of data may be transferred when the application is constantly downloading map data, we recommend a data flat rate for frequent users. Wi-Fi can also be used (provided your mobile device supports that feature). You can also use the Nokia Map Loader to download map data directly from your PC to your mobile device.
Start the Nokia Maps application on your mobile device at least once and make sure that it has established an online connection to the map data server before you try to transfer map data with the Nokia Map Loader. With this first start of the application, a cookie is created and stored on the memory card; this file is necessary for the Nokia Map Loader to recognize the memory card.
You can also avoid downloading data and costs related to data transfer in the Nokia Maps application itself by turning off the network connections in the network settings (go to Options > Settings > Network > Network Usage > Never).
The navigation feature and the guides can only be used after paying a fee.
3.2 What does the map data download cost?
While you may be charged for the transfer of map data in accordance with your network provider’s service plan, the use of the map data itself is free of charge. As large amounts of data may be transferred when the application is constantly downloading map data, we recommend a data flat rate for frequent users. Wi-Fi can also be used (provided your mobile device supports that feature). You can also use the Nokia Map Loader to download map data directly from your PC to your mobile device.

With this first start of the application, a cookie is created and stored on the memory card; this file is necessary for the Nokia Map Loader to recognize the memory card.
3.3 Do I have to update the map data every time Nokia Maps is used?
No, Nokia Maps uses hybrid technology - hybrid architecture meaning that basic world map (a bitmap image) is pre-installed on the mobile device, and when more detailed map data is needed the connects to the server via mobile internet or Wi-Fi and downloads map data from the server on demand. All downloaded map data is stored on the mobile device’s internal memory or memory card (depending on what option has been chosen beforehand) so that the next time a map is accessed it does not need to be downloaded again (on Symbian Series 60 2nd Edition mobile devices like the Nokia N70 it is not recommended to use the internal device memory; please use a storage card on these mobile devices). Through the settings, you decide how much memory you want to set free for this data. Once the memory fills up, the oldest data is overwritten.
3.4 Can I test the Nokia Maps navigation feature prior to purchasing it?
You can test the navigation feature for three days without paying a license fee (valid on all supported navigable maps; not available for Symbian Series 60 2nd Edition mobile devices, for example, Nokia N70).
3.5 What does the navigation cost?
| Navigation license | 1 week | 1 month | 1 year | 3 years |

The price for a guide is around 7,99 €. Pricing will vary from guide to guide. Purchasing city guides is a one time purchase – you get the city guide for an unlimited time.
3.7 Can I also use Nokia Maps abroad? How can I avoid roaming costs?
Naturally, Nokia Maps can also be used abroad. In case the region in question has no map data available on the mobile device, it can be downloaded in Nokia Maps. For this purpose, mobile data costs will arise. Nevertheless, Nokia Maps has a feature which informs you that your mobile device may be connected to the network of a foreign network provider, in which case additional costs may arise due to roaming (you can avoid downloading data and costs related to data transfer by turning off the network connections in the network settings (go to Options > Settings > Network > Network Usage > Never).
To avoid roaming costs you can download the map data for the regions you need on your mobile device through the Nokia Map Loader (note that roaming costs can be substantial. For further information on the costs arising through roaming, contact your network provider).
3.8 How can I prevent Nokia Maps establishing an online connection to the map server to avoid additional data transfer costs?
Even when map data has been preloaded on your memory card or internal device memory, if you have an active data network connection (Wi-Fi or mobile internet) the application will still automatically access the server by default to optimise your experience of Nokia Maps. You can avoid downloading data and costs related to data transfer by turning off the network connections in the network settings (go to Options > Settings > Network > Network Usage > Never).
4.1 Which mobile networks can be used for Nokia Maps?
Any IP-based network including General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE), Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), and Wireless Local Area Network (Wi-Fi) networks can be used (depending on what networks are supported by your mobile device).
4.2 How does Nokia Maps work?
Nokia Maps uses a server/client model in which global maps and address information are stored on the server. The Nokia Maps application downloads the map data from the server when needed and stores it locally (on the device internal memory or a memory card; on Symbian Series 60 2nd Edition mobile devices like the Nokia N70 it is not recommended to use the internal device memory; please use a storage card on these mobile devices). The Nokia Maps application uses this locally stored data when no mobile internet connection is available.
The application downloads certain map tiles, not the entire map of a certain region or city. For example, if you plan a route from Berlin to Hamburg, all map tiles lying on your route will be downloaded, but not the entire map of Germany (a connection to the internet might be necessary).
4.3 Is the navigation service always available?
The servers work on a very high service level, but of course outages may occur.
4.4 Does Nokia gate5 GmbH (a Nokia company) have influence on the availability of the Nokia Maps service?
We cannot control the data networks or the GPS satellites but the map servers are under our control.
4.5 How much data can be downloaded when driving from a city to another (approximately a 2-hour drive)?
Approximately 2.5MB
According to the measurements: Berlin -> Dresden, total: 2.49 MB (2,614,484 bytes) Saved on disk: 3.25 MB (3,416,064 bytes) (+30%)
4.6 What size are the maps?
Berlin (city area): 1.5 MB
Berlin (metropolitan area) 3.2 MB
Paris (metropolitan area) 8 MB
Germany: 200 MB
Helsinki: 2.4 MB
London: 21 MB (incl. 7-digit postcodes)
4.7 What size are the guides?
e.g: WCities London: 1.700 KB
e.g: Insight Guides London 370 KB
4.8 How does the address search work?
If you have allowed Nokia Maps to use an internet connection, the search is done on the server and downloaded to the application.
If you have not allowed an internet connection or if there is no internet connection available, the address is searched from the map data that has been downloaded to your mobile device. If sufficient map data is not available, no results may be found for a specific query. In this case we would recommend you to switch the network settings in your Nokia Maps application to When needed to perform the address search on the server. To change the network settings in the Nokia Maps application, go to Options > Settings > Network.
4.9 Where are various files stored?
On some mobile devices like the Nokia N95, Nokia Maps will be pre-installed on ROM (Read Only Memory), the map data and additional guide content will be stored on the memory card drive if existing. If the mobile device needs to be reflashed, map data will not be lost if stored on the memory card. Purchased features can be restored via manual update as long as you keep your International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI; same mobile device). To regain your navigation license in the Nokia Maps application for the remaining time period of your navigation license (go to Options > Extra Services > Add navigation).
If you want to use Nokia Maps on a mobile device on which it hadn’t been pre-installed already, it is up to you whether you want to install Nokia Maps on the memory card or on the internal mobile device memory. We recommend installing Nokia Maps on the memory card where more memory space is available.
4.10 When trying to install Nokia Maps, I get an error message saying Update Error. What should I do?
Note that if you already have the Nokia Maps application preinstalled on your mobile device (like it is, for example, on the Nokia N95 mobile device), it is not necessary to download and install the entire application again. However, you may run an update of the Nokia Maps application on your mobile device. Please have a look if an update for the pre-installed Nokia Maps version on your mobile device is available.
4.11 When I’m using Nokia Maps I cannot launch any other application, what could be the reason for this?
It may happen that the Nokia Maps application uses the entire internal cache of your mobile device for map data. After you close the application you may not be able to launch any other application, which is due to the internal mobile device memory being full.
If this has happened to you, delete any older data (MP3, pictures) from your mobile device’s internal cache using the Nokia File Manager.
5.1 How do I turn on the GPS functionality in my mobile device?
Using a mobile device with internal GPS receiver, please have a look into the manual of your mobile device on how to get the best GPS performance from the internal GPS receiver.
Using an external GPS receiver (for example connected via Bluetooth technology), please press 0 on the numeric keypad of your mobile device to connect to the GPS receiver, so you can use the full GPS functionality of Nokia Maps. If Bluetooth is not switched on already, you will first be asked whether you want to switch on Bluetooth. Your mobile device will then start searching for devices available via Bluetooth technology in your surrounding area. From the result list displayed, choose the correct entry to connect to your external GPS receiver.
You may be asked for a pass code to connect to your GPS receiver. Although this pass code is “0000” in most cases, please have a look into the manual of your GPS receiver to find out what the correct pass code is.
5.2 Do I need an external GPS receiver to use Nokia Maps?
Some Nokia mobile devices already have an internal GPS receiver (for example, Nokia N95). For those mobile devices, there is no external GPS receiver needed (check your mobile device’s manual to see if it is equipped with an internal GPS receiver).
Other mobile devices do not have an internal GPS receiver. To use Nokia Maps on such a mobile device, you need to connect an external GPS receiver to your mobile device via Bluetooth technology. Press 0on the numeric keypad of your mobile device to connect to the GPS receiver. If Bluetooth is not already switched on, you will first be asked whether you want to switch on Bluetooth. Yyour mobile device will then start searching for devices available via Bluetooth technology in your surrounding area. From the result list displayed, choose the correct entry to connect to your external GPS receiver.
You may be asked for a pass code to connect to your GPS receiver. Although this pass code is “0000” in most cases, please have a look into the manual of your GPS receiver to find out what the correct pass code is.
To use Nokia Maps for mapping and routing only, you do not need a GPS connection.
5.3 Where is the GPS antenna located?
If you have a mobile device with internal GPS receiver, please consult your mobile devices manual to find out about the localization of the GPS antenna in your mobile device.
5.4 How long does it take to obtain a satellite fix?
While the theoretical minimum to get a satellite fix is approximately 40 seconds, in practice, the required time is usually from one to several minutes. This can be shorter if the GPS receiver is restarted in a location where it has been used just shortly before.
To get the best performance, the GPS receiver needs good visibility to the satellites. Performance can be impacted on by the environment, for example, high buildings or cloudy/rainy weather may affect the signal quality.
5.5 What is my current position on the map?
To show your current position, press 0 (or space on full keyboards) or go to Options > Find place > GPS position. Remember that you need a GPS connection to show your current position.
If you press the 0 key in the Nokia Maps application on mobile devices that do not have an internal GPS receiver, the mobile device will connect to the GPS receiver via Bluetooth technology. If Bluetooth is not already switched on, you will first be asked whether you want to switch on Bluetooth. Your mobile device will then start searching for devices available via Bluetooth technology in your surrounding area. From the result list displayed, choose the correct entry to connect to your external GPS receiver
You may be asked for a pass code to connect to your GPS receiver. Although this pass code is “0000” in most cases, please have a look into the manual of your GPS receiver to find out what the correct pass code is.
Now you can start searching nearby locations or share your location with your friends or family.
5.6 Does the GPS functionality work in the car?
The performance of the GPS function in the car depends on the car, location of the car kit holder, and the windows (for good visibility to satellites). Some car windows that have athermic (or UV-coated) windscreens may also affect the signal strength.
If your car has a windscreen heating, it might take a little longer until a first fix is found.
5.7 How do I get the best performance from GPS?
In case you use a mobile device with internal GPS receiver, please have a look into the manual of your mobile device on the location of the GPS antenna. When using the GPS receiver, hold it upright in your hand at an angle of approximately 45 degrees, with a clear view of the sky. Make sure that your hand does not cover the GPS functionality. The time is takes to establish a GPS connection may vary between a few seconds and several minutes. Establishing a GPS connection in the car may take longer.
Note: The GPS functionality takes its power from the battery. Using an internal GPS receiver or a Bluetooth connection to an external GPS receiver may drain the battery faster.
If no satellite signal is found, consider the following:
Please mind that when using an external GPS receiver (for example via Bluetooth technology), you have to press 0 key on the numeric keypad to establish a connection to the receiver (if Bluetooth is not already switched on, you will first be asked whether you want to switch on Bluetooth. Your mobile device will then start searching for devices available via Bluetooth technology in your surrounding area. From the result list displayed, choose the correct entry to connect to your external GPS receiver). You may be asked for a pass code to connect to your GPS receiver. Although this pass code is “0000” in most cases, please have a look into the manual of your GPS receiver to find out what the correct pass code is.
5.8 When I open the Nokia Maps application why does it not show my current GPS position but the previous one?
Nokia Maps does not automatically show your current GPS position in the map. If you want to see your current GPS position in the map, please go to Options > Find place > GPS position or press 0 on the numeric keypad (or space on full keyboards). Please mind that it might take a few minutes until the GPS receiver gets a fix. To get the best performance, the GPS receiver needs good visibility to the satellites. Performance can be impacted on by the environment, for example, high buildings or cloudy/rainy weather may affect the signal quality.
Using Nokia Maps on a Nokia N70 (or any other Symbian Series 60 2nd Edition mobile device), your current position in the map is shown as soon as the connected GPS receiver has located your current position. It can take a few minutes until the GPS gets you tracked and your position in the map is shown.
5.9 How do I access Nokia Maps to use with the Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver on my Nokia mobile device?
Press the menu key, and select Nokia Maps. With Nokia Maps, you can see your current location on the map, browse maps for different cities and countries, search for addresses and different points of interest, plan routes from one location to another, and save locations as landmarks and send them to compatible devices.
You can also purchase extra services, such as city guides and a navigation service with voice guidance
Nokia Maps uses GPS. You can define the positioning methods used with your device in the device settings. For the most accurate location information, use either the internal GPS or the external GSP receiver.
When you use Nokia Maps for the first time, you may need to define an internet access point for downloading map information for your current location. To change the default access point later, select Options > Settings > Network > Default access point.
Almost all digital cartography is inaccurate and incomplete to some extent. Never rely solely on the cartography that you download for use in this device.
Downloading maps may involve the transmission of large amounts of data through your service provider's network. Contact your service provider for information about data transmission charges.
Tip! You can also download maps by using a wireless LAN connection.
To receive a note when your device registers to a network outside your home cellular network, select Options > Settings > Network > Roaming warning > On.
6.1 Does payment via SMS work with all network providers?
No, it does not work with all network providers. Although we cover the major ones, some are still missing and may be added in due course (please contact your network provider for further information). If your network provider does not support payment via Premium SMS, by default the pay via Premium SMS option is not displayed.
6.2 What happens if I open one or more of the incoming premium Short Message Service (SMS) messages before the Nokia Maps application?
The premium SMS is sent so quickly that there is little time for you to leave the application beforehand. The very moment the license SMS is received to your mobile device, it is immediately processed by the application so that the purchased features can be used on the spot.
6.3 What happens to purchased features if I change my mobile device?
In the event of a mobile device change, please contact Nokia Customer Care via http://www.nokia.com/support.
Before calling Nokia Customer Care, please make sure that following information is at hands:

6.7 What happens to my purchased features if I install a new version (update) of Nokia Maps on top of the old one?
If you install a new version of Nokia Maps on top of a former one, your purchased features will not be affected.
6.8 How can I transfer a city guide license after a firmware software update (“firmware reflash”) or formatting the internal device memory?
In case the entire mobile device is formatted, for example due to a firmware software update (“firmware reflash”), you can retrieve the purchased license for your city guide via the update function. For instance, if you press the update button after the mobile device was formatted, your license for, say, a City Guide to Berlin is transferred. The city guide license is updated via Options > Extra Services > Guides. Then choose the guide you are looking for and press Options > Update
Note that you may still need to update the contents of the city guide itself. The guide file itself has to be downloaded again using the City Guide menu. It is then unlocked automatically because the license is already on your mobile device.
6.9 Is the payment by credit card made over a secure connection?
Yes, the connection between the License Manager application on your mobile device and server is RSA encrypted, and the connection from the License Manager server to credit card authoriser is SSL-secured.
6.10 Can the update feature be used as often as I like?
All purchases in the shop are locked to your SIM Card (MSISDN) and the IMEI International Mobile Equipment Identity) number of your mobile device.

6.12 When I try to enter my license code, Nokia Maps tells me that this was an Invalid Code. What can I do in order to activate the license?
Please make sure that you have chosen the region for which your license code is valid before entering the license code (Options > Extra Services > Add navigation. Choose the region you had purchased and click on Enter license code).
7.1 What is the Nokia Map Loader?
Nokia Map Loader is a programme that enables your PC to download map data for the Nokia Maps application and to install it on your mobile device. This will save you the costs for downloading the map data through your mobile device, and it is also much faster. Furthermore, it brings the advantage of having the map data of entire cities or regions on your mobile device, so that the data is immediately available when starting the application, and you do not have to wait for the data to be downloaded.
7.2 How do I install / start the Nokia Map Loader application the first time?
First, download the Nokia Map Loader application onto your PC. After that, double click the Nokia Map Loader icon. You will then be asked to confirm the license agreement and to select the location where the application will be installed. The installer checks if you have already installed the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.x program. If this is the case, the installation is complete. If you do not yet have this software installed on your PC, the Nokia Map Loader installer will ask you to install .NET Framework 3.x and download it. After the installation of Nokia Map Loader and Microsoft .NET Framework 3.x is complete, the Nokia Map Loader starts automatically and you can start to use it.
7.3 What do I have to do in order to transfer map data through the Nokia Map Loader?
There are two ways to transfer map data onto your mobile device:
1 - through card reader
2 - through USB cable
In the first case, you need to take the memory card out of your mobile device and insert it into a card reader connected to your PC. In the second case, you need to connect your mobile device to the PC by an USB cable. When using this method it is very important that you choose the Mass Storage mode on your mobile device; otherwise the data transfer will not take place. After you have chosen Mass Storage, confirm that you will use the mobile device in an offline mode (press Continue).
To use Nokia Maps on a Nokia N70 (or any other Symbian Series 60 2nd Edition mobile device) to transfer map data to your mobile device, take the memory card out of your mobile device and insert it into a card reader connected to your PC. Start the Nokia Map Loader to transfer the required map data onto your memory card. On these mobile devices it is not possible to transfer map data via USB cable and PC Suite.
7.4 What is the recommended way to transfer map data to my Nokia device via Nokia Map Loader software?
Keep in mind that you need to use the application within your mobile device at least once before you can transfer data with the Nokia Map Loader. In case you want to transfer data through an USB cable, it is necessary to choose the Mass Storage mode on your mobile device. Otherwise the data transfer will not work.
Note that when using Nokia Maps on a Nokia N70 (or any other Symbian Series 60 2nd Edition mobile device) to transfer map data to your mobile device, you need to take the memory card out of your mobile device and insert it into a card reader connected to your PC. Start the Nokia Map Loader to transfer the required map data onto your memory card. On these mobile devices it is not possible to transfer map data via USB cable and PC Suite.
7.5 How do I transfer map data onto my mobile device via PC?
In order to avoid data transfer cost on your mobile device, you can transfer map data onto your mobile device via PC and the Nokia Map Loader. The download of map data via Nokia Map Loader is also much faster.
After installing the Nokia Map Loader application on your PC, start the application. First, choose the continent in the tab on the top of the application window. Then choose the country. Some small countries can be chosen completely, others have several sub-maps from which you have to choose the ones you want to install.
You can install as many maps as you want, as long as you have memory space left on your card. In case you choose more data than there is space left on your card, you will get a warning message. You can see the map you have chosen on the right side of the window. With the + symbol you can add maps to your list. With the - symbol you can remove them from the list. Press the download button to transfer the map data onto your mobile device or memory card. After the download to your mobile device has been compiled, the list on the right side of the screen will be cleared.
7.6 What does the Nokia Map Loader install on my PC?
The Nokia Map Loader needs the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.x programme to operate properly. Therefore, the installer checks if you already have installed this program version. In case you have not installed it, the installer will ask you if you want to download and install .NET Framework 3.x. Confirm the installation process and let the installation run through; otherwise you will not be able to use the Nokia Map Loader application on your PC.
7.7 The Nokia Map Loader does not recognize the mobile device I connected through USB, nor the memory card with the Nokia Maps application in my card reader. What should I do?
Start the Nokia Maps application on your mobile device at least once and make sure that it has established an online connection to the map data server before you try to transfer map data with the Nokia Map Loader. With this first start of the application, a cookie is created and stored on the memory card; this file is necessary for the Nokia Map Loader to recognize the memory card. After the first start of the Nokia Maps application within your mobile device, you can either connect your mobile device through USB with your PC or insert the card into your card reader connected to your PC.
7.8 I’ve downloaded an area to my mobile device through the Nokia Map Loader, but the transfer does not terminate – what should I do? Can I abort the download?
Note: Do not abort the download of map data onto your mobile device. Before you start the transfer, make sure that there is enough memory space available on your memory card for the amount of data you want to copy. You can see the amount of data which should be transferred to your mobile device in the Nokia Map Loader application on the line Total selected; on the line below you can see how much memory space there is left on your mobile device.
Keep in mind that if you try to export huge amounts of data, for example if you want to transfer the map data of an entire country or continent, it might take very long until all data has been transferred to the card. Also note that you need to keep the USB connection to your mobile device constant (data transfer via USB connection does not work with Symbian Series 60 2nd Edition mobile devices like the Nokia N70. Use a card reader connected to your PC and insert the memory card into it in order to transfer map data via Nokia Map Loader), as well as the connection from your PC to the internet while transferring data.
7.9 Why is the amount of data shown in Space left on mobile device in the Nokia Map Loader less than the actual size of my memory card?
The Nokia Map Loader on your PC shows the amount of available data on your memory card that can be used for storing map data in the Nokia Maps application (for example, if you have a 1GB memory card with half of the card’s memory space intended to be used for Nokia Maps, the Nokia Map Loader will show you 512MB free disk space, provided you have no map data installed yet). You can change the amount of data destined to be used for map data in the Nokia Maps application through Options > Settings > Network Settings > Max. memory card usage (the bar indicates how much of the memory card can be used for Nokia Maps before the oldest map data is overwritten).
7.10 The Nokia Map Loader does not download map data although my PC is connected to the internet, what should I do?
As the Nokia Map Loader application uses the same internet gateway as some internet programmes, Nokia Map Loader may not connect to the internet in order to download further map data if you have set the internet settings to ‘offline’ in one of these programs. Check that the internet connection in the programs you use is not set to work offline.
7.11 After copying map data onto my mobile device via Nokia Map Loader, Nokia Maps crashes after starting it. How can I avoid this?
This problem may be caused by the Nokia Maps application on your mobile device using data from a different map data release other than the Nokia Map Loader on your PC. To avoid this, make sure you always the latest versions of Nokia Maps installed on your mobile device and Nokia Map Loader on your PC.
8.1 What is a pre-bundled navigation license?
A pre-bundled navigation license is a license that enables you to navigate in the Nokia Maps 1.0 application for a certain time period, in a selected area or region, without paying additional license fees for it (however, data transfer costs my arise according to your network providers service plan).
You can also avoid downloading data and costs related to data transfer in the Nokia Maps application itself by turning off the network connections in the network settings, (go to Options > Settings > Network > Network Usage > Never).
The pre-bundled navigation license needs to be activated by you in the Nokia Maps application (go to Options > Extra Services > Add navigation). Accept the Terms and Conditions and press Purchase (note that you actually do not purchase anything, but activate a pre-bundled license. You are not charged for using the pre-bundled license).
Make sure you activate the pre-bundled navigation license before doing a firmware software update (“firmware reflash”) of your mobile device.
8.2 How can I activate the pre-bundled navigation license?
For selected areas and mobile devices, a pre-bundled navigation license for a certain period of time is available. To activate a pre-bundled navigation in your Nokia mobile device with Nokia Maps, open the Nokia Maps application, and go to Options > Extra Services > Add navigation. Accept the Terms and Conditions and press Purchase (note that you actually do not purchase anything, but activate a pre-bundled license. You are not charged for using the pre-bundled license). Your mobile device will then try to connect to the license server to activate the navigation license. Choose an access point (you can use mobile internet or Wi-Fi).You will receive a confirmation notice telling you about the successful activation of your pre-bundled navigation license.
8.3 For which region is the pre-bundled navigation license valid?
The pre-bundled navigation license is valid for the region indicated on your Nokia mobile device with Nokia Maps. For further information, check the support material that comes with your package. The pre-bundled navigation license cannot be activated for a region other than the one indicated in the enclosed information material.
8.4 How can I get other regions? Do I have to consider anything in particular?
If you are interested in purchasing more regions than the one covered by your pre-bundled navigation license, you can purchase them in the Nokia Maps application (go to Options > Extra Services > Add navigation > Select region/country). You can pay for additional navigation licenses via credit card, Premium SMS (not with all network providers) and phone billing (not with all network providers).
8.5 What happens to my pre-bundled navigation license if I update my mobile device’s firmware software (“firmware reflash”)?
If you want to update the firmware software of your Nokia mobile device with Nokia Maps 1.0 (for example, via Nokia Software Updater), make sure you activate the pre-bundled navigation license beforehand. Provided you have already activated the pre-bundled navigation license before doing a firmware software update, you can regain your navigation license in the Nokia Maps application for the remaining time period of your navigation license (go to Options > Extra services > Add navigation).
8.6 What happens if I change my mobile device (exchange of mobile device, for example for warranty reasons) after I have already activated the pre-bundled navigation license?
In case of a hardware exchange (for example, warranty exchange), contact Nokia Customer Care via http://www.nokia.com/support.
Before calling Nokia Customer Care, please make sure that following information is at hand:
